Another tragedy on the N1 North, a stretch of road that has seen more accidents in 2018 than any other in South Africa.
The president of South Africa has sent his condolences to those affected. A total of 26 people were killed on Friday afternoon including two minors.
Since then footage of the aftermath has emerged from numerous sources including images that have flooded social media in what is being said to be one of the worst accidents in South Africa this year.
Police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe described what happened.
At about 14:30, a truck that was carrying cement was traveling along the N1 South when it lost control [and veered into] the other lane facing the oncoming traffic [and] collided with four motor vehicles
A 22-seater Mercedes Benz and Nissan NP200 caught fire on impact
Sources have yet to confirm the cause of the accident but Limpopo department of transport spokesperson Matome Moremi Taueatsoala has mentioned in a statement that the trucks left front tyre burst causing the vehicle to lose control at high speed.
The driver died in the collision and a case of culpable homicide has been opened on the grounds that the status of the truck was unroadworthy.
These images tell of another tragedy that claimed the lives of 26 people. With the death toll rising steeply due to accidents on this stretch of Limpopo road we hope the minister of transport takes note and something gets done to help prevent this happening again.
