RESIDENTS FORCED TO EVACUATE AS BETTY’S BAY FIRE MOVES ACROSS THE WESTERN CAPE

Residents in the top end of Mooiuitsig who are in imminent danger of possibly being caught in the fire line are currently being evacuated. Fire Services, Law

Enforcement, Traffic and SAPS officials are in attendance and are guiding those affected to Crassula Hall in Betty’s Bay.

The fire has gained momentum and is heading towards Pringle bay. Overstrand Municipality requests that residents remain on high alert until the situation can be properly assessed.

The safety of the community remains the primary concern.

The R44 along this stretch has been closed.

The biggest risk at this point is for the small holdings on the Reservoir Road.

An out of control blaze in the Betty’s Bay and Pringle Bay area has already claimed the life of one person and resulted in the evacuation of some residents from their homes.

The Greater Overberg Fire Protection Association (goFPA) reported earlier on Thursday morning that the fire had crossed over the R44 and is expected to move toward the sea. Some residents in Pringle Bay and Hangklip area have been requested to evacuate to the Pringle Bay town centre for their safety.

We request the public to keep the communities of Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay, Hangklip and surrounding rural area in their thoughts, it was a traumatic night full of uncertainty

Fire protection services added that 2 other people were seriously injured and one person sustained a minor injury.
